Easy Easter Cookie Decorating Ideas for Busy Moms and Bakers

Hey y’all, welcome to the kitchen! Whether you're a busy mama, a booked-out baker, or just someone who loves adding a little sweetness to the season, I’ve got three easy Easter cookie decorating ideas that are perfect for beginners — no royal icing mastery required (unless you want to, of course!).

I’m Sarah Grace, founder of Sarah Grace Cookie Co., and I help folks create beautiful sugar cookies and flexible income from home. Today, I’m sharing three fun and simple Easter designs you can whip up quickly — perfect for last-minute orders or creative time with your kiddos.

Let’s hop right in! 🐰💕

1. Crackle Effect Cross Cookies

This is hands-down one of my favorite designs — not just because it's simple, but because of what it represents. As a Christian, Easter is all about the cross for me. This crackle effect cross cookie has become my go-to image every year to share the message behind the season.

And the best part? No royal icing required!

What You’ll Need:

  • Your raw sugar cookie dough

  • White gel food coloring (I use AmeriColor, available on Amazon)

  • A designated cookie paintbrush or a new food-safe brush

Mix your white gel food coloring with a touch of any color you’d like — pink, gray, lavender — get creative! Paint the mixture directly onto your unbaked cookies and pop them into the oven. As they bake and expand, a stunning crackle texture appears.

This technique works beautifully on crosses, Easter eggs, bunnies, or chicks — and you can keep it simple or add flair!

Optional Add-Ons:

  • Pre-made royal icing florals (find these in your baking aisle or online)

  • Or, make your own using techniques from my royal icing videos

Either way, it’s easy, meaningful, and absolutely beautiful.

2. Wet-on-Wet Easter Egg Cookies

This technique is so fun and super kid-friendly. Think of it like cookie sand art!

What You’ll Need:

  • Royal icing at flooding consistency

  • A few gel food coloring shades

  • A scribe tool or toothpick for swirling fun

Start with a base color on your egg-shaped cookies, then quickly dot or stripe other colors on top while everything is still wet. Use your scribe tool to create cool marbled or swirled effects.

These cookies dry beautifully in one go — no layering or long waits. Perfect for decorating with kids or prepping a batch in a pinch.

3. Watercolor Easter Cookies

These watercolor cookies are my secret weapon for creating elegant cookies without the stress of detailed piping.

What You’ll Need:

Flood your cookies with a white icing base and let them dry completely (this part’s important — at least 6–8 hours or 2–4 hours in a low-temp oven).

Once dry, mix lemon extract with a few drops of gel food coloring and paint your design on the cookie’s surface. You can make it simple with dots and swipes or go bold with flowers and swirls.

For a little extra shine, mix gold luster dust with your extract and gild the edges. The result? Elegant, artistic cookies that are deceptively simple to make.
